Mayor tells council he may have to step down in future

January 28, 2013

At the January 9 city council meeting, Mayor Haroon Saleem told councilmembers that he wasn’t sure how long he would be able to continue as Mayor due to health issues.

The council was voting on a Mayor pro-tem and Saleem wanted them to understand that he may have to step down before the end of his four-year term.

Saleem was voted in as Mayor in the November election 2009. He will not be running for Mayor in the election this fall.

Nominations for Mayor pro-tem included Councilmember Matt Hartman and councilmember Josh Golston. After a split vote of 2-2, Hartman declined the nomination.

Next councilmember Tom FitzGerald and Josh Golston were nominated. Again the vote was split 2-2.

It was decided to hold the vote again at the January 16 meeting where absent councilmember Tess Greene would be in attendance.

At the January 16 city council meeting Matt Hartman was voted in as Mayor Pro Tempore.

Golston moved to nominate Hartman and the entire council voted to appoint Hartman as Mayor pro tem.
