LVW of Snohomish County celebrates birthday with award and recognition

February 25, 2013

On February 9th the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County celebrated the 93rd Birthday of the National League of Women Voters with a luncheon at the Everett Golf and Country Club. The annual premier “Democracy in Action” Award was presented to the Elections and Voter Registration Division of the Snohomish County Auditor’s Office. Auditor Carolyn Weikel accepted the award on behalf of the staff. The Elections and Voter Registration Division has consistently provided rapid, accurate, and easy to understand information to people of Snohomish County who want to vote and participate in elections in the County. With just a staff of eight people, they serve over 700,000 county residents.

Guest speaker for the program was Deborah Parker, Vice-chairwoman of the Tulalip Tribes, who recounted her experiences meeting in Washington, D.C., with Senator Patty Murray to push through the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) several years overdue. Once again, the US Senate passed the VAWA of 2013 and moved it on to the House of Representatives. The Act, initially passed in 1994, has been renewed in 2000 and 2005.
