Governor signs four Hobbs’ bills into law, including Part 2 of Fair Tenant Screening Act

April 30, 2013

Four bills sponsored by Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, were signed into law Tuesday, headlined by Senate Bill 5568 which will help victims of domestic violence have fair and equal access to housing.

SB 5568, the Fair Tenant Screening Act Part 2, expands the original act to include protections for victims of domestic violence. Currently, tenant screening reports are allowed to contain information about domestic violence protection orders and eviction lawsuits. The bill will remove that information from those reports.

“My hope is that this bill will help the transition away from domestic violence just a little less difficult,” Hobbs said. “Victims of domestic violence have been through more than many of us can imagine already. There’s no reason to relive that horror while looking for a home.”

Three other bills sponsored by Hobbs were also signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Jay Inslee:

• SB 5446 – Helps the state auditor’s office fulfill its duties by clarifying the process to use its subpoena power.

• SB 5517 – Changes the criteria for the beer and wine tasting endorsement for grocery stores.

• SB 5541 – Concerns the redemption of real property.
