Relay for Life L.S. this weekend

May 8, 2013

Touching, energetic, hopeful, are all words used to describe the feelings you get when you witness or are a part of Relay for Life, the annual fundraising event that takes place at Lake Stevens High School and raises tens of thousands of dollars to help local cancer patients and provides millions of dollars to research in hope of finding a cure.

This year’s Relay for Life of Lake Stevens will be no exception!

Hundreds of Lake Stevens residents, their families and friends will gather at the High School stadium at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 10 to celebrate the opening ceremony of this year’s Relay.

Opening ceremonies includes a salute to cancer survivors of all ages and their caregivers and ends with the survivors starting off with a first lap walk around the track.

The Luminaria ceremony will take place at 11 p.m. sharp and is the most heart-warming part of Relay. During the Luminaria ceremony all of the lights in the stadium are shut off and the track will be lined with decorated paper sacks, each honoring a loved one who has battled cancer, each will be lit with a candle to guide walkers through the night.

There is also a short ceremony where survivors and their caregivers will share their stories. This is something you don’t want to miss!

Relay for Life will go on from 6 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 with over 50 teams and 500 participants.

If you have never been to a Relay for Life event and just want to see what it is all about, now is your chance to take a look.

Come on down anytime within the 22-hour window and walk the track, see what teams are doing for fundraising and feel the energy of the crowd as they work as a community to help stop the all too familiar disease called cancer. You will be hooked!
