Nickerson earns Eagle Scout

August 20, 2013

Cole Nickerson of Boy Scout Crew 187 has just earned his Eagle Scout after completing his Eagle project which consisted of the construction and installation of an Interpretive sign post and site rehab at the historic Rucker Mill site located in the North Cove Park in Lake Stevens.

The Lake Stevens Historical Society was the beneficiary of the project.

The Eagle Scout Service Project is the culminating event that needs to be completed in order for a Scout to achieve the highest rank bestowed by the Boy Scouts of America, that of Eagle Scout.

Nickerson determined that he would like to do something for the Historic Society and brought the idea to the Society Board of providing some sort of historic markers at significant locations around the Lake. Lake Stevens has a rich history as a mill town however there are very few historic locations identified or marked so the community is aware of the history.

After several meetings with the Historical Society, he proposed a rehab project at the site of the last remaining foundations of the Rucker Brothers Shingle Mill in North Cove Park. Additionally he would construct an interpretive sign post located there to tell the community and visitors what the location was in the past.

Upon Society Board approval, Nickerson then had to go before the Lake Stevens City Parks Board for project approval as it was located within a city park. After the Parks Board approval and subsequent approval from the Mt. Baker Council, Boy Scouts of America, the project was underway.

The project included reconstruction of the gravel pathway, pressure washing and waterproofing the wood edging, installation of much needed landscaping within the planter beds at the North Cove Park sign and the Mill Foundation flag pole.

Nickerson also constructed a sign post located at the Mill Foundation with an interpretive sign panel that provides the history of the mill and the town of Lake Stevens through narratives and pictures. Upon completion of work on the project, he was subject to a board of review held by the Mt. Baker Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The satisfactory completion of the project as well as the other requirements he was held to, allowed him to assume the rank of Eagle Scout. He was then advanced to rank of Eagle Scout during an Eagle Scout Court of Honor held on August 3, 2013.

Nickerson is a 2013 graduate of Lake Stevens High School and is currently attending United States Marine Corps Boot Camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif.
