The SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge opens about 600 times a year. For a 60-year-old bridge, hoisting and lowering two counterweights weighing a total of 250 tons over and over, well, it’s tough!
To ensure the bridge is fit and healthy, WSDOT needs to replace heavy pieces of machinery and that means bridge closures.
They’ve already had nightly southbound closures but this weekend they will have a full-weekend southbound closure, from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
During the closure southbound drivers should use I-5, and to reach Smith Island, drivers can enter SR 529 at State Street in Marysville or follow a detour on I-5.
