Private signs on public roads

Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs on the road?

Road signs are there to protect and inform the public of speed limits, upcoming intersection, where to stop, and where pedestrians may be crossing.

These are placed following a Federal guideline so that when motorists travel between states, the signs should follow the same purpose.

Some people will decide to place their own signs on the road.  Sometimes people will post these onto public road sign poles.

There is a State Law (RCW 46.81.075) that prohibits this action and could result in a fine.

The reason for this is that the posting of a private sign on a public traffic sign could distract a motorist and result in an accident or injury.

If you do have an event and want to post a private sign, please check with the City’s Planning department first.

They can work with you on what is allowable under the Lake Stevens Municipal Code.
