“I came to Congress to get results and work towards compromises that will allow us to make progress on the biggest challenges facing our nation.” “I hope it will serve as the foundation for future and continued bipartisan work.” These are quotes from Rep. Susan DelBene (1st Congressional District) about her vote for the new federal budget deal.
The federal budget that Congresswoman DelBene voted for will cut one percent of the Cost-of-Living-Allowance (COLA) from working age retired veterans.
Many of the politicians mentioned that it was a small cut for retired veterans who are now working new jobs. Interesting was that no other federal workers, including Congress, had this restriction put on them.
It also did not exempt the medically (wounded) retired veterans. Also, the numbers add up for this one percent each year, for an E-7 who retires at age 40 years would lose over $70,000 by the age of 62.
This bi-partisan budget, which Rep. DelBene voted for, authored by Sen. Patti Murray, shows that absolute lack of respect that Congress has for our military and breaks their promise to the men and women who leave their homes, take an oath to defend this nation with their lives, put the uniform of their nation on, and then serve with distinction and honor. I think about a great quote by Pres. George Washington, “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of early wars were treated and appreciated by our nation.”
It is time to hold Congresswoman DelBene accountable for her decisions and tell her that the promises to veterans are important, she apparently doesn’t feel the same.
