Lake Stevens Wrestling wins sixth-consecutive league title

The Lake Stevens High School Wrestling team won their sixth-consecutive Wesco North title on Tuesday, Jan. 18, defeating Snohomish High School 41-18 at a dual meet.

Snohomish went up 12-0 to start the meet, pinning Lake Stevens wrestlers in the 220 and 285 weight classes.  But from there Lake Stevens won eight matches straight to take a commanding lead.

The meet ended with the 195-pound weight class, where Lake Stevens' Cody Vigoren, ranked first at 195 pounds, won 7-1 over Snohomish's Justin Kearney, ranked tenth at 195 pounds.

In other matches between ranked wrestlers, Lake Stevens also came out on top. At 120 pounds, Lake Stevens's Michael Soler, ranked second at 113 pounds, won 5-1 over Snohomish's Wyatt Butler, ranked ninth at 113 pounds.  At 132 pounds, Lake Stevens's Jake Douglas, ranked second at 126 pounds, won 12-2 over Snohomish's Keaton Mills, ranked ninth at 126 pounds.

The Vikings finished 4-0 in league dual meets for the season. Since 1990, the Vikings have won the league title every year except for 2008, when Snohomish beat them in a dual.

The Vikings now begin preparation for the post-season, where they hope to defend their 2013 4A state championship. According to washingtonwrestlingreport.com, Lake Stevens is currently ranked second in state for 4A, one point behind Union High School and one point ahead of Moses Lake High School.
