The Wesco 4A District 1 wrestling tournament went about as well as Lake Stevens could've hoped, with the Vikings winning the team title and qualifying fifteen wrestlers for the regional tournament.
The Vikings scored 379.5 team points, while second-place Snohomish had 356 points. The last time the Vikings didn't win the district tournament was in 2012, when Snohomish edged them out for the victory. Before that, the Vikings had won every district tournament since 2000.
Lake Stevens had four individual champions: Michael Soler at 113 pounds, Jake Douglas at 126 pounds, Noah Cuzzetto at 132 pounds, and Cody Vigoren at 195 pounds.
All four wrestlers are ranked in the top two in the state for their weight class, and all of them won their finals matches by more than nine points or by pin.
At 113 pounds, Lake Stevens junior Tyler Headland placed second to Soler after pinning Snohomish's Wyatt Butler in the semifinals. Junior Alex Rodorigo also placed second, losing to Cascade's David Garcia in the finals at 120 pounds.
The Vikings secured the victory over Snohomish largely because of five wrestlers who moved through the consolation bracket to place third: Garret Gershmel at 120 pounds, Trysten Perales at 132 pounds, Zach Cunningham at 138 pounds, Logan Johnson at 160 pounds, and Mason Beaver at 170 pounds. Perales defeated Snohomish's Noah Bomar in the consolation finals after losing to Bomar earlier in the tournament by a score of 15-6.
Wyatt Bell (126 pounds), Devian Jones (138 pounds), Ty Stacy (145 pounds), and Bhodi Scott (160 pounds) also placed in the top five for the Vikings and will move on to the regional tournament at Central Kitsap High School next Saturday.
The top four from the regional tournament move on to state, where the Vikings hope to defend their state title.
