Snohomish County residents get almost $4 million in refunds through United Way; Free tax prep available through April 15

(Everett, WA) - Working evenings and mornings, over 100 volunteers have filed 1,874 tax returns in Snohomish County on behalf of working individuals and families. The service is free and is one of the ways in which United Way is helping people reach and maintain financial stability.

Six weeks into the program, the tax preparers, working out of numerous tax sites throughout the county, have helped residents get back $3,942,240 in refunds including $1,381,798 through the Earned Income Tax Credit saving taxpayers more than $340,000 in preparation fees. The average income for those making use of the program is a little higher than $24,000 a year.

United Way's Free Tax Preparation Centers in Snohomish County are located in Everett, Lynnwood, Marysville and Monroe. The tax sites are staffed by IRS-certified volunteers. At each site, volunteers are able to help people in English and Spanish.

Since 2006, United Way volunteers have prepared 12,025 tax returns worth more than $20 million in refunds for Snohomish County families. Almost a third of that total, $6.39 million, can be attributed to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which the IRS estimates lifts more than 6.6 million Americans above the poverty line each year.

This year's sponsors and partners include The Boeing Company, Washington State Department of Commerce, Moss Adams LLP, Goodwill, the Walmart Foundation and the Internal Revenue Service.

What You Should Bring

Although no appointment is necessary, taxpayers must bring a picture ID; social security card or tax identification number for everyone on the return; W2s or other income statements from all employers; any 1099 forms; the name, address and tax ID number for your child care provider; records of student loan payments; record of payments for educational expenses such as college tuition; mortgage interest and property tax statements; a bank account number to receive your refund via direct deposit; last year's tax return - if you have it; and, if you're filing jointly, both spouses are required to be present to file electronically.

Free tax preparation, encouraging people to purchase U.S. Savings Bonds and financial education programs are part of United Way's overall effort to help Snohomish County families achieve and maintain financial stability.
