SR 530 crews keeping an eye on rainy weather today
ARLINGTON, Wash. – Because of the size of the slide, we’ve divided our rescue and recovery efforts into two sections – east and west side. East-side crews are working alongside local volunteers from Darringon to progress into the slide area. Search dog teams will work west from the east side of the slide today as they search the site. Crews will drive the dogs farther in along the access road before they begin work, which allows the dogs to work farther into the area
Rescue and recovery efforts continue on the west side, as well, and crews plan to keep an eye on the weather, as the forecast calls for rain all day at the site.
We want to reiterate that we’ve confirmed 90 people who are currently missing or unaccounted for. If you have additional information about missing friends or family, please contact the Snohomish County Sheriff tip line at 425-388-3845.
The Mountain Loop Highway opened yesterday at 1 p.m. Drivers are reminded that this is highway in name only. It is a long, windy, narrow gravel road with a maximum speed limit of 25 mph. All-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, and it is not suitable for freight traffic.
The state Department of Licensing will be in Darrington from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today to reissue driver’s licenses to those affected by the slide. Residents can bring valid ID to pick up their mail at the U.S. Postal Service office in Darrington.
Beginning Friday, March 28, Community Transit will begin new bus service to connect the residents of Darrington with grocery and medical services in Skagit County, and job centers in Arlington and Everett. More information about this new route – number 231 – is expected to be available online at http://www.communitytransit.org by Thursday, March 27.
A crisis care hotline is available for those in the community who have been affected by the landslide. That number is 1-800-584-3578, and it is staffed around the clock to provide counseling and crisis intervention.
