Lake Stevens High School Wrestling takes third at Tri-State Tournament

The Lake Stevens High School Wrestling team took third place at the Tri-State Wrestling tournament Dec. 20 in Coeur d’Alene, one of the most difficult tournaments in the Pacific Northwest.

The Vikings had no individual champions but had two wrestlers place second, senior Noah Cuzzetto at 132 pounds and junior Cody Vigoren at 195 pounds. Cuzzetto faced returning state and Tri-State champion Michael Cook of Kuna. Cuzzetto led by two points late in the third period – and nearly extended his lead with a takedown that was ruled out of bounds – but gave up a takedown to send the match to overtime, where Cook scored another takedown to win.

Vigoren faced Samuel Colbray of Hermiston, a returning state champion, Tri-State champion, and Greco-Roman national champion. Vigoren kept the match tied 1-1 until late in the third period, when Colbray scored a takedown as time expired.

Sophomore Jake Douglas (126 pounds) placed third, losing 1-0 in the quarterfinals to the eventual winner at his weight, Fred Green of Orting. Three other Viking wrestlers placed: A.J. Crew, fifth at 113 pounds; Michael Soler, seventh at 120 pounds; and Logan Johnson, sixth at 170 pounds.

Lake Stevens was the highest-placing Washington team, finishing six points ahead of Moses Lake and fifteen points ahead of Tahoma. Kuna, Idaho, won, finishing 42 points ahead of Lake Stevens.

The Vikings next home dual is Saturday, Jan. 11 vs. Roseburg, Oregon at 5pm, LSHS.
