Green competed in oratorical contest

Junior Dansil Green represented Granite Falls High School at the Oratorical Contest semi-finals sponsored on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Moses Lake.

The contest, also known as A Constitutional Speech Contest, is organized by the state level of The American Legion.

Green was sponsored by the Lake Stevens American Legion.

Although she did not make it to the finals, Green did an outstanding job with both speeches. She spoke on women’s suffrage for her 8-10 minute prepared speech, and then spoke for three minutes on the fourth Amendment, covering search/seizure and probable cause.


Only eight students statewide were motivated enough to take this challenge. Retired Teacher, Tom Thorleifson, of Monte Cristo Elementary (as well as American Legion Post 181 Public Affairs Chairperson, Past Commander) said, “It does take a tremendous amount of time and energy, with most students starting in September or early October for the December certification. Dansil participated last year and knew she wanted to give it another try this year.” Thorleifson continued,  “Her speeches, this year, were even better!” Those who make it to the finals on February 1 (in Spokane) had a chance for the $500, $1,000, $1,500, and $2,000 scholarship money and a chance to go to the national competition!
